Old bread bags have been given a new life at the Public Relations and Communications Association Africa Conference in Johannesburg, where they were transformed into colourful lanyards for delegates.
More than a thousand discarded bread bags were cleaned, cut and crocheted into durable strips by the organisation Re.Bag.Re.Use, turning waste into practical conference items.
The initiative formed part of Global Recycling Day, highlighting how everyday plastic waste can be repurposed into functional and creative products.
Organisers say the project also supports local women involved in the production process while reducing environmental waste through reuse.

Renowned South African photographer Zanele Muholi has been named the 2026 Hasselblad Award laureate, one of the world’s most prestigious honours in photography.
Presented by the Hasselblad Foundation, the award recognises Muholi’s powerful work documenting the lives of Black LGBTQIA plus communities.
Born in Umlazi, Muholi has spent over a decade creating a visual archive focused on identity, visibility and human rights, with their work exhibited at leading global institutions.
The prize is worth roughly R3.6 million, and includes a gold medal, a Hasselblad camera, and a major international exhibition programme in Sweden.
