Global Recycling Day highlights importance of recycling in communities
Story 2
Global Recycling Day, observed on Wednesday, highlighted how recycling helps communities thrive while protecting the environment.
In South Africa, thousands of people rely on recycling for income, with local organisations repurposing plastic, recovering glass and collecting packaging to reduce waste and support families.
The day also reminds us that when communities, businesses and government work together, recycling can create cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods and a healthier planet for everyone.
Groups like Re.Bag.Re.Use, PETCO South Africa, The Glass Recycling Company and Waste Pickers South Africa show how everyday actions—collecting, sorting, and reusing materials—can make a real difference in people’s lives and the world around them.

Karabo Poppy turns art and design experience into a cultural children’s book
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Karabo Poppy used her experience as a graphic designer and street artist to create a children’s book that blends story, pictures and culture.
She illustrated Hugged by the Night, her first children’s book written by Harold Green III, turning Green's poem into comforting images for young readers.
Poppy chose colors and designed the idea of night to help soothe children, and Chronicle Books invited her to join the project, giving her freedom to create the visuals in her own style:
