Global Recycling Day highlights importance of recycling in communities
Story 3
Global Recycling Day, observed on Wednesday, highlighted how recycling helps communities thrive while protecting the environment.
In South Africa, thousands of people rely on recycling for income, with local organisations repurposing plastic, recovering glass and collecting packaging to reduce waste and support families.
The day also reminds us that when communities, businesses and government work together, recycling can create cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods and a healthier planet for everyone.
Groups like Re.Bag.Re.Use, PETCO South Africa, The Glass Recycling Company and Waste Pickers South Africa show how everyday actions—collecting, sorting, and reusing materials—can make a real difference in people’s lives and the world around them.
