Greenside Primary crowned Science Scuffle champions

Greenside Primary School claimed first prize at the Science Scuffle finals and prize-giving ceremony, that was hosted by the City of Johannesburg's Library and Information Services Directorate.

The competition challenges Grade 6 and 7 learners to test their scientific knowledge through quiz questions based on books from the city's special science collections.

School teams competed at library, zonal, regional and metropolitan levels, with the overall winner being decided at the Metropolitan Final.

New partnership to atrengthen Cape Care Fund's community impact

The Western Cape government says the Cape Care Fund continues to make a tangible difference through initiatives that provide essential support to disadvantaged communities, including wheelchairs and sanitary products.

The provincial Department of Social Development has secured a partnership with the Cape Town Science Centre that will see nearly R11 million invested into the fund.

The Western Cape's Wendy Kaizer-Philander says the collaboration will strengthen the fund’s capacity to support underprivileged communities.

Barack and Michelle Obama honoured in first official joint portrait

The Obama Foundation has unveiled the first official joint painted portrait of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama ahead of the grand opening celebrations of the Obama Presidential Center this week.

Internationally renowned artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby combined photos from family albums and historic moments, that were transferred through printmaking to create the portrait.

The work includes references to Michelle Obama's childhood home in Chicago, the Resolute Desk, books, music and artifacts from the Obama presidency.

Crosby is best known for her richly layered paintings that weave together personal memory, photography and history.
