Crawford International Sandton Pre-Primary recently held its inaugural Africanarra celebration, rooted in the African Reggio Emilia Alliance (AREA) approach.
This approach adapts the child-led, creative learning philosophy of Italy’s Reggio Emilia method, blending it with African cultural values like storytelling, community, and heritage.
The event welcomed St Teresa’s Convent School from Coronationville for a day of shared stories, play, and learning centred on the power of oral tradition.
Children enjoyed interactive activities, storytelling sessions, and a communal meal, with gifts of books and lunchboxes to take home.
Generous donations also enriched St Teresa’s school library, extending the spirit of giving beyond the event.
This joyful celebration aims to become an annual tradition, fostering cultural pride and community connection among young learners.

Mozambique has taken another big step in restoring its black rhino population, with 10 more critically endangered rhinos translocated to Zinave National Park.
The donation from South Africa’s Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife brings the total to 47 rhinos, forming the first founder population since the species went locally extinct 50 years ago.
The move strengthens Zinave as the country’s only ‘big five’ park and highlights regional cooperation in wildlife conservation.
Officials say the rhinos are thriving and this effort boosts biodiversity and ecotourism while securing the species’ future in Africa.

As Youth Month continues, 17-year-old Tiamara Andrew from Fourways is driving change through her NPO, Blessing Lives, with the return of the Drive 2 Unite charity event.
Taking place on 22 June at Montecasino, the event will feature a 250-vehicle convoy—ranging from supercars to 4x4s—raising awareness and collecting sanitary pads for underprivileged girls.
Attendees are encouraged to bring pad donations, which will support learners from disadvantaged schools across Gauteng.
Andrew says this year’s event introduces permanent drop-off points to ensure ongoing support beyond Youth Month.
She hopes to spark a national movement against period poverty—one pack at a time.
