The initiative aims to honour Nelson Mandela's belief in education by equipping learners with digital skills and creating more opportunities for their future.
Govender says knowing the computer lab will benefit learners for years to come makes the effort worthwhile.

Hand Knitted Blankets Bring Warmth to Alexandra Families

Children and families supported by Rays of Hope in Alexandra will stay warmer this winter after receiving more than 80 hand knitted blankets ahead of Mandela Day.
The donation, made possible by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Dis Chem's innovation hub X and bigly labs, also included essential hygiene items such as toothbrushes, soap and toilet paper.
Rays of Hope says the support will benefit children at its early childhood development centres, while surplus blankets will be distributed to families in need.

Western Cape Learner Shortlisted for Prestigious Global Essay Prize

Somerset College learner Petrus Bosman has been shortlisted for the 2026 John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize in the Economics category, placing him among the world's top young academic writers.
More than 100 000 students from 183 countries entered the competition, with only the top 17.5 percent of eligible essays making the shortlist after a rigorous judging process.
Petrus will now travel to London for the awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced in October.
