Twelve-year-old Saige Johnston from Olivedale returned from Japan with new skills and confidence after attending elite judo training and an international championship in Fukuoka.
One of only five girls selected by Judo South Africa, she trained twice a day for three and a half hours, learning new techniques and embracing the discipline of Japanese judo.
Representing South Africa was a proud moment, and she hopes to inspire other young girls.
Saige plans to compete internationally again, work towards her black belt, and one day open her own judo class, crediting her coach Sensei Michelle Diamond for her guidance.

A group of southern white rhinos has been relocated to a secure private reserve, as part of a wider effort to protect the species.
The move, coordinated by African Parks, the Wildlife Emergency Fund, and the Global Humane Conservation Fund of Africa, is part of the Rhino Rewild initiative, which aims to rewild 2000 rhinos into well-managed habitats across Africa over the next decade.
The rhinos are closely monitored with advanced anti-poaching technology and have space to thrive in a protected environment.
Southern white rhinos have recovered from near-extinction in the 1930s, but populations have dropped to around 17,500 due to poaching. Initiatives like this improve their chances of long-term survival.

Parkmore Nursery School has transformed the corner of 9th Street and Marie Avenue into a vibrant verge garden.
Extra agapanthus plants from the school were planted along both sides of the road, turning a dusty intersection into a colourful community space.
Principal Nancy Turner said the project aims to spread joy to passersby and encourage residents to contribute to beautifying public spaces.
Security guard and groundsman Onwell Purazeni helped lead the initiative, describing it as a labour of love and a way to make the community look better.
