Ireland Makes Basic Income for Artists Permanent
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Ireland has made its pandemic era basic income scheme for artists permanent, offering a weekly stipend of €325, about R5 700, to selected creative workers. The programme, first introduced as a pilot in 2022, supports around 2 000 artists each year and helps participants focus on their work without financial stress.
An independent review of the pilot found it generated more roughly R1.75 billion, in social and economic benefits for the Irish economy, as artists spent more time creating and less on unrelated jobs.
Artist Elinor O’Donovan said the scheme transformed her life, letting her work full time, take creative risks, and hire collaborators, opportunities she could not afford before.
