South African Team Detects Most Distant ‘Cosmic Laser’ Ever
Story 3
A team led by the University of Pretoria has discovered the most distant hydroxyl megamaser, a natural “cosmic laser”, using the MeerKAT radio telescope.
The signal comes from a galaxy so far away that we see it as it was when the universe was less than half its current age. Its radio waves were further amplified by a perfectly aligned foreground galaxy, creating a natural gravitational lens that helped detect this extraordinary phenomenon.
Scientists say the discovery opens new windows into galaxy evolution, star formation, and black hole activity, and demonstrates South Africa’s leading role in radio astronomy.
Dr Thato Manamela, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pretoria explains

Designer Turns Thrift Shop Rags into Fashion for Charity
Teaser / Tailpiece story
In the United Kingdom, an English thrift shop supporting Derian House Children’s Hospice has received a creative boost from recent fashion graduate Victoria Ford.
The shop had been buried under mountains of donated clothes, many too worn or damaged to sell. Ford is transforming these unwanted items into bespoke fashion pieces, which are sold at premium prices to benefit the hospice.
Shop manager Mick Croskery says the project is attracting new customers while giving unsellable clothes a second life. Ford has even turned unusual items like inflatable mattresses into handbags.
