South African Team Detects Most Distant ‘Cosmic Laser’ Ever
Story 1
A team led by the University of Pretoria has discovered the most distant hydroxyl megamaser, a natural “cosmic laser”, using the MeerKAT radio telescope.
The signal comes from a galaxy so far away that we see it as it was when the universe was less than half its current age. Its radio waves were further amplified by a perfectly aligned foreground galaxy, creating a natural gravitational lens that helped detect this extraordinary phenomenon.
Scientists say the discovery opens new windows into galaxy evolution, star formation, and black hole activity, and demonstrates South Africa’s leading role in radio astronomy.

São Paulo Passes Law Allowing Pets to Be Buried with Their Owners
Teaser / Tailpiece story
The state of São Paulo has passed the “Bob Gravedigger Law”, allowing family pets to be buried in cemetery plots alongside their owners, provided sanitary conditions are met.
The law honors Bob, an orange dog who spent ten years living next to his owner’s grave at Taboão da Serra cemetery, refusing to leave despite repeated attempts by the family to take him home. Bob became a fixture of the cemetery, comforting mourners until his death in 2021.
Representative Eduardo Nóbrega, one of the law’s authors, said it recognizes the bond between people and their pets, ensuring respect and care at the moment of farewell.
