Former waste picker Sifiso Gumbi has turned his experience into an initiative supporting more than 450 waste reclaimers across Johannesburg and surrounding areas.
Through Urban Surfer South Africa, Gumbi helps reclaimers earn more sustainable incomes while keeping recyclable waste out of landfills.
The organisation provides recycling hubs, branded trolleys and protective equipment, while partnering with businesses to create better opportunities.
In one nine month period, 50 reclaimers collected more than 700,000 kilograms of recyclable plastic worth about R1.4 million.

More than 100 learners at Chris Nissen Primary School in Knysna have received new school uniforms through a community support initiative.
The learners received 110 pairs of school shoes, 110 shirts and 110 pairs of trousers, helping to ease the financial pressure on families and ensure children can attend school with greater confidence.
The initiative was led by the Garden Route National Park’s Knysna Section, with MPM Enviro Enterprise helping to source the uniforms.

Residents and staff from Thembalami Care Centre and the Max Ordman Deaf Association enjoyed a special lunch hosted by the Johannesburg Mini Council at the Edenvale Community Centre.
The event brought residents together with members of the wider community for a programme of singing, dancing and poetry.
Residents joined in the dancing and were treated to boerewors rolls and ice cream before receiving gifts.
The gathering also gave residents an opportunity to socialise, enjoy themselves and connect with people from the community.
