Grandmothers in Johannesburg gain tools for independence

In Johannesburg, grandmothers and community leaders, known as gogos, were empowered with essential digital and mobility skills at an event hosted by inDrive and goGOGOgo.
Participants received hands-on training in smartphone navigation and ride-hailing basics, helping them move safely and independently.
The initiative also provided starter kits including smartphones, blankets, and handmade bags, supporting both technology use and local income-generation.
With plans for more sessions later this year, the programme aims to bridge the digital and transport divide for older women, recognising their critical role in South African families and communities

Young Artists’ Project Returns to Durban

The Young Artists’ Project exhibition is back at KZNSA Gallery in Durban from August 22 to September 21.
The initiative supports emerging artists through mentorship, creative development, and public engagement.
This year features N’lamwai Luntha Chithambo, recognised in national exhibitions, and Zama Mwandla, whose surrealist paintings explore trauma and healing.
Free artist-led walkabouts are scheduled for August 23, with opportunities for school and university groups to meet the artists.
The project continues to nurture new talent and strengthen Durban’s role as a hub for emerging creative voices.

Rare Paganini violin to shine at BBC Proms

One of the world’s most valuable violins, once owned by legendary composer Niccolò Paganini, will be played at the BBC Proms in London this month.
The Carrodus violin, crafted in 1743 by Italian maker Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù and worth 20 million dollars, was recently acquired by a philanthropic group to be loaned to leading musicians.
South Korean violinist Inmo Yang will debut at the Proms on August 28 with the historic instrument at the Royal Albert Hall.
Music lovers can look forward to hearing its rich, sonorous tones as Yang performs Pablo de Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, bringing new life to a masterpiece once played by Paganini himself.
