Maryland set to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores under new consumer protection law
Teaser / Tailpiece story
The US state of Maryland is set to become the first in the country to ban surveillance pricing in retail grocery stores after lawmakers passed the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act.
The law targets what is also known as dynamic or personalised pricing, where shoppers are charged different prices for the same item based on data collected about them.
Governor Wes Moore has confirmed he will sign the bill, which stops large retailers from using personal data to change prices in real time, while still allowing standard promotions and loyalty discounts.
The legislation was driven by concerns over the growing use of digital pricing systems and data tracking in retail, with supporters saying it will help protect consumers from unfair pricing practices.
