South African doctors perform breakthrough limb-saving cancer surgery
Story 1
A 15-year-old rugby player in Tshwane has become the first patient in South Africa to undergo a rare limb-saving procedure after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma.
The surgery was carried out at Netcare Unitas Hospital, where doctors removed a 24 centimetre section of the teenager’s femur affected by cancer.
Instead of replacing the bone, surgeons used a specialised liquid nitrogen technique to destroy cancer cells before reimplanting the patient’s own bone.
The advanced procedure, led by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jaco Viljoen, aims to preserve normal bone growth and mobility, giving the teenager a chance to return to sport in future.

Deaf UFS student makes history with sign language master’s thesis
Story 2
A University of the Free State graduate has made academic history after completing a Master of Arts in South African Sign Language and Deaf Studies entirely in sign language.
Renatha van Reenen, the first deaf child in South Africa to receive a cochlear implant in 1987, has now become the first deaf student at the university to submit a full thesis in sign language video format.
Instead of a written dissertation, her research including arguments, findings and references was recorded in South African Sign Language.
Her work explores how facial expressions and mouth movements contribute to grammar and meaning in sign language communication.
The process required extensive filming, re recording, as well as subtitles and visual elements for the final submission.
