A Pietermaritzburg mother and daughter have transformed neglected public spaces in their neighbourhood into colourful and welcoming areas.
Lee Anne and Lynne van Rooyen planted aloes, succulents and red hot pokers along Zwartkop Road and the railway embankment, while also helping keep nearby streets free of litter.
They also found a creative solution to protect the gardens after their request for municipal barriers was unsuccessful, using painted tyres around the plants.
Their efforts have now earned them a Sweet Spot nomination from the Keep PMB Clean Action Group.

Women from across South Africa who have overcome adversity and made a positive impact in their communities have been recognised at the WomenCan Awards in Midrand.
Held under the theme Rebirth and Reinvention, the awards celebrate women driving change through business, leadership and community work.
Among those honoured was Lethabo Foundation founder Relebohile Msiza, who overcame cancer after being diagnosed while studying at university.

Tarentaal retirement village resident Carla Fasold has been recognised by Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital for spending the past 10 years knitting blankets and other items for vulnerable babies.
Carla spends almost five hours a day knitting and self-funds the wool used to make blankets, jerseys and sensory items for babies from disadvantaged backgrounds.
She says seeing the babies who receive her handmade items has given even greater meaning to her work and strengthened her determination to continue helping.
