Parktown High learners turn wool donation into warmth

Parktown High School for Girls has received a generous donation of wool from Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre.
The wool was collected during a Nelson Mandela Day initiative and will be used by the school’s KnitWits club to make scarves, blankets and other handmade items for people in need.
The donation will also allow more learners to take part in the knitting and crochet project and help extend its reach into the community.

Special Olympics athletes receive free health screenings

More than 300 young athletes with intellectual disabilities received free medical screenings during the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Rustenburg.
The screenings covered six areas of healthcare and formed part of a partnership between Special Olympics South Africa and health authorities.
More than 51 medical professionals were also trained to better support people with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics South Africa CEO Ancilla Smith expressed gratitude for the support, saying partnerships like these help expand access to healthcare for athletes.

8 Gauteng students selected to study medicine in Cuba

Eighteen young people from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng have been selected to study medicine in Cuba through a government funded medical training programme.
The students were chosen from more than 2,400 applicants across the province, with preference given to candidates from lower income households and disadvantaged schools.
After completing their studies, they will return to South Africa to work in the public healthcare system, particularly in communities facing shortages of doctors.
