Eighteen young people from disadvantaged communities in Gauteng have been selected to study medicine in Cuba through a government funded medical training programme.
The students were chosen from more than 2,400 applicants across the province, with preference given to candidates from lower income households and disadvantaged schools.
After completing their studies, they will return to South Africa to work in the public healthcare system, particularly in communities facing shortages of doctors.

Documentary leads to lifesaving care for 40 animals

A documentary showing the harsh conditions faced by animals in a poor Cape Town community has led to 40 animals receiving vital care from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
After seeing the footage, SPCA teams located the area and provided treatment including vaccinations, deworming and tick and flea control.
Several animals needing further veterinary care were also identified, while three were taken for sterilisation and two were placed in the SPCA’s care.
