R28 Million Digital Hub Opens in Soweto to Boost 4IR Skills

A new R28 million digital hub has been launched at the South West Gauteng College in Dobsonville, Soweto, to prepare students for careers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The project, led by FASSET in partnership with the Department of Higher Education and Training, will train 800 learners over the next two years in fields such as cybersecurity, coding, data analytics, cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Sixty lecturers will also be upskilled to deliver these courses both in person and online, ensuring wider access to digital learning.
FASSET says the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide, empower township communities and create pathways into South Africa’s growing digital economy.

AfriCAT Project Wins Mental Health Data Prize Africa

The AfriCAT project, led by Dr Bianca Moffett at the SAMRC/Wits-Agincourt Unit, has won the Mental Health Data Prize Africa for its innovative approach to adolescent mental health.
AfriCAT uses Computerised Adaptive Testing to assess depression and anxiety, tailoring questions to each individual to provide accurate results efficiently. The tool is designed to help frontline healthcare workers, educators and policymakers identify those most in need of support.
Co-designed with adolescents, caregivers and professionals in South Africa and Kenya, AfriCAT ensures that the tool is both user-friendly and relevant to local contexts.
By winning the prize, AfriCAT is set to advance data-driven, scalable mental health solutions, bridging the treatment gap for young people across the continent.
