A 14 year old learner, Mduduzi Mabena, has been appointed as a Junior Commissioner in a Safer Schools campaign aimed at promoting safer and more supportive learning environments in Gauteng.
The initiative, a partnership between the South African Police Service, the Gauteng Department of Education and the BrightSpark Foundation, gives learners a platform to voice concerns and work on practical solutions to improve school environments.
Mabena addressed fellow learners in Sandton, encouraging them to stay focused on education despite everyday challenges.
The programme also provides leadership training and mentorship to help young people become ambassadors for positive change in their schools and communities.

Wits Ranked Africa’s Top University in Global Rankings

Wits University has been ranked the number one university in Africa in the 2026 Centre for World University Rankings, placing it among the top one percent of universities globally.
The Johannesburg institution was ranked 200th out of more than 21 thousand universities worldwide, with strong scores across education, research, faculty performance and graduate employability.
Other South African universities including UCT, Stellenbosch, UKZN and the University of Pretoria also featured in the global top rankings, highlighting the strength of the country’s higher education sector.
