Papua New Guinea Records Sharp Drop in Malaria Deaths
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Papua New Guinea has recorded a major decline in malaria deaths, falling from about 13 per 100,000 people to just one, through improved prevention, testing and treatment efforts.
The country, which carries around 90 percent of malaria cases in the Western Pacific, has expanded rapid diagnostic testing and treatment programmes, helping to drive down fatalities in recent years.
Deaths have dropped from about 700 a year in 2000 to 148 last year, supported by wider distribution of mosquito nets, medicines and testing kits across health centres.
