Wits unveils R300 million sports complex

The University of the Witwatersrand has unveiled its new R300 million Brian and Dorothy Zylstra Sports Complex in Johannesburg, with the facility expected to open to athletes, patients and the public in September.
The state of the art complex brings sports science, rehabilitation, healthcare, research and high performance training together under one roof. It also includes disability sport facilities and specialist laboratories to support athlete development and improve performance.
Wits says the complex, made possible through support from the Zylstra family and the Skye Foundation, will benefit student athletes while also serving schools, sporting organisations and the wider community.

Gugulethu residents unite to tackle litter and reduce flooding

Residents of Gugulethu in Cape Town have joined community organisation Lokshin Pioneers to clean up the Gugulethu Canal and help reduce flooding in their neighbourhood.
Volunteers removed 150 bags of waste from the canal and installed a No Dumping sign to discourage illegal dumping. The initiative forms part of a wider partnership with the City of Cape Town, which is also working with residents in Nyanga and Borchard's Quarry to improve drainage and reduce the impact of flooding.
The project has also included environmental awareness campaigns and educational events for learners, encouraging communities to protect local waterways and help prevent future flooding.
