Brakpan youth leader Lerato Maris has been named one of the recipients of the 16th African Achievers Awards in recognition of her work empowering young people and supporting sustainable development.
Maris will receive the Excellence in Youth Development and Sustainable Development Advocate and African Youth Leadership and Social Impact Award at a ceremony at the House of Lords in London on 22 July. The honour follows her recent recognition as Global Peace Chain's Best Ambassador of the Year for 2026.
Her work focuses on mentoring young people, promoting volunteerism and helping equip youth with skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Blanket donations bring warmth to vulnerable communities

Doorway to Dignity has received nearly 200 blankets and winter clothing to help vulnerable children and families stay warm during the winter months.
The donations came from the Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club, Scubaversity Dive Club and an anonymous corporate donor. The organisation has already started distributing the blankets to children's homes, shelters, a preschool near Orange Farm and other organisations supporting vulnerable people in Gauteng and Limpopo.
Doorway to Dignity says the donations will help bring comfort and dignity to those most affected by the winter cold.

Hospital hosts free cervical cancer screenings in Springs

Life Springs Parkland Hospital in Springs hosted a cervical cancer awareness event, offering 75 free cervical cancer screenings to encourage early detection.
Healthcare professionals answered questions and educated women about the disease, which is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide.
The hospital also reassured attendees that Pap smear tests are quick and can detect abnormal cell changes before they develop into cancer, improving the chances of successful treatment.
The initiative encouraged sexually active women to speak to their healthcare providers about regular screening.

Google expands investment in South Africa's digital future

Google has announced a series of new investments that will strengthen South Africa's role in Africa's growing digital economy.
The company will build a new connectivity hub in the Eastern Cape, invest R3 million in a digital innovation centre in Soweto, and include 15 South African start ups in its accelerator programme.
Google says it has also surpassed its five year goal of investing one billion US dollars across Africa, with a focus on improving connectivity, artificial intelligence and digital skills.
