City Power is taking the wheel in Johannesburg’s green revolution with the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city.
The utility will soon use its own electric vans and trucks for maintenance operations, cutting fuel costs and reducing carbon emissions.
Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the move supports a broader plan to position the city as a leader in the green economy.
Charging stations will be set up at depots first, then expanded to public areas and townships to encourage private EV adoption.
The project also includes solar microgrids in informal settlements and clean energy upgrades at clinics, schools and hospitals

Tommy Chan went into cardiac arrest on 20 May and was kept alive by CPR from Tawnya Shimizu, who was passing by with her daughter.
She jumped into action after hearing a 911 operator giving CPR instructions, performing chest compressions until paramedics arrived.
Weeks later, Chan posted online asking, “Did you save my life?” — and the message found its way back to Shimizu.
Their upcoming reunion highlights the life-changing impact of knowing CPR and acting when it matters most.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls has emerged as the top school in the 2025 MobiReadathon Digital Reading Finals, hosted by the University of Johannesburg Library.
Now in its third year, the programme—launched by the City of Johannesburg Library Services—uses mobile technology to promote reading and writing among Grade 8 learners.
Ten schools competed in digital challenges including a QR Code Reading Challenge, a main quiz, and a Reading for Meaning session.
The initiative not only boosts digital literacy but also introduces learners to higher education spaces and lifelong reading habits.
