Church feeding scheme supports more than 100 residents each week
Story 1
St Gabriel’s Anglican Church continues to support vulnerable residents through a weekly feeding scheme that has been running for more than eight years.
Every Saturday morning, volunteers prepare and serve nutritious meals to more than 100 people in the community.
Church leaders say the programme is sustained by donations and focuses on assisting the widowed, orphaned and families facing hardship.
Beyond the weekly meals, the church also provides food parcels and works with local organisations to deliver additional support where it’s needed most.
The initiative has become a consistent source of relief for many households in the area.

Home Affairs issues record four million smart IDs in 2025
Story 2
The Department of Home Affairs has issued more than four million smart ID cards in 2025, the highest number ever recorded in a single year.
Figures from the department show just over four million cards were delivered, a 17 percent increase from 2024 and nearly 1.3 million more than in 2023.
Home Affairs says upgrades to its digital systems and improvements at the Government Printing Works helped speed up processing and reduce downtime.
Minister Leon Schreiber says the rollout is expanding access to services, allowing more people to open bank accounts, apply for jobs and access social grants, while replacing the more fraud-prone green ID book with safer smart cards.

Learners at East Bank High School in Alexandra have received much-needed school uniforms, thanks to a donation drive led by the Thusong Youth Centre.

The school governing body has welcomed the support, saying the uniforms restore dignity, confidence and a sense of unity among learners.
The centre plans to continue assisting other schools across the community.
