India fast tracks shift to clean energy
Teaser / Tailpiece story
India could industrialise without following the heavy fossil fuel path taken by China and western economies, according to new analysis by energy thinktank Ember.
The report says India’s per person road oil demand is about half of what China’s was at a similar stage of development and is already close to peaking.
Coal use is around 40 percent lower, while solar power now makes up roughly nine percent of electricity generation.
Ember says falling clean energy technology costs are helping India grow its economy while limiting its dependence on coal and oil, although emissions are still rising overall.
