18th-Century Saint Francis Painting Returns Home to Teotihuacan Church After 20 Years
Story 3
An 18th-century painting of Saint Francis of Assisi has been returned to the San Francisco de Asis church in Teotihuacan Mexico, more than 20 years after it was stolen in a 2001 burglary.
The artwork was identified when a Mexican auctioneer submitted it to the Art Loss Register as part of standard due diligence, leading to its recovery and safe return.
Padre Teodoro García Romero welcomed the painting back, calling its return a historic moment for the church and the local community, restoring part of Teotihuacan’s cultural heritage and offering a cause for celebration and renewed faith.
