Nal’ibali launches indigenous children’s story call

Nal’ibali Trust has launched a national call for original children’s stories in indigenous languages as South Africa marks Africa Month.
The initiative promotes literacy, African identity and mother-tongue reading in IsiNdebele, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.
Organisers say children learn best in their home languages.
This initiative seeks to encourage creativity and preservation of South Africa’s linguistic heritage.

Cape Town expands youth skills programme

The City of Cape Town has expanded its Installation, Repair and Maintenance Programme to train 250 unemployed young people in technical skills and workplace experience.
This places participants in municipal departments including Water and Sanitation and Human Settlements.
Participants assist artisans with plumbing, carpentry, electrical support and repair work while completing accredited training.
The expansion follows a pilot project in which 18 of the 31 trainees secured permanent jobs in the City and private companies.

Midlands community knits blankets for needy

A Midlands community in KwaZulu-Natal has knitted and donated 318 blankets for people in need through an initiative led by Piggly Wiggly Country Village.
Knitters met weekly at the coffee shop over several months to create blanket squares, with some continuing work at home.
The blankets were showcased earlier this month during a community event where residents gathered to view the finished work.
The blankets will now be distributed to support people requiring warmth across the region.

Cannes Gala honours women in cinema

Red Sea Film Foundation hosted its Women in Cinema gala during the 79th Cannes Film Festival in France, honouring six women in film from Africa, Asia and the Arab world.
The event marked the first time three African women were recognised.
The foundation’s film festival has screened more than 520 films from 85 countries, with the next edition set for December in Jeddah.
