Local Clean Ups Support Recycling and Education Initiative
Story 1
Community clean up projects in Albertsville and Melville Koppies are helping support a growing recycling initiative led by Hlanzekile River and Ocean Cleaning.
The organisation collects waste from rivers, streams and public spaces before sorting recyclable materials at a workshop in Soweto, where plastic is melted and transformed into products including pens and school desks for learners. Founder Floyd Nyayi says the project links environmental restoration with education and community development.
The initiative has continued expanding through partnerships and community participation since it was launched in 2023.
