Gift Leotlela Wins Dramatic 100m Diamond League Opener in China
Story 2
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela has claimed a major career victory after winning a tightly contested men’s 100m race at the Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.
Leotlela clocked 9.97 seconds to edge Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and the United States’ Kenny Bednarek, who both finished just behind him in an extremely close photo finish. Fellow South African Akani Simbine placed sixth in a strong international field that included several of the world’s top sprinters.
Leotlela says he stayed focused on his own race despite a shaky start, managing to hold his form through the final metres to secure his first Diamond League win of the season.
