Diepsloot Youth Turn to Smart Farming to Build Businesses
Story 3
Twenty young South Africans in Diepsloot are building farming businesses using compact solar powered Hydro Co op units in a pilot programme aimed at tackling youth unemployment and food insecurity.
Led by Afrika Tikkun and funded by E Squared Investments, the initiative combines poultry and hydroponic vegetable production in mobile systems that use less water and can operate in areas with limited infrastructure. Participants, mostly young women, are receiving hands on training in farming, business management and sales while producing food for local markets.
If targets are reached, the programme is expected to produce thousands of chickens and vegetables annually, creating hundreds of thousands of meals and saving significant amounts of water.
