Twenty young South Africans in Diepsloot are running small farming businesses through the Green Acres Hydro-Coop programme, which aims to tackle youth unemployment and food insecurity.
The initiative by Afrika Tikkun, funded by E Squared Investments, uses solar-powered units that combine poultry farming and hydroponic vegetable production.
Participants are gaining hands-on experience in farming, sales, and business while producing food that is sold through local retail partners.
If successful, the project could produce thousands of chickens and vegetables annually, creating both income and meals for surrounding communities.

Teacher at Tiyani Secondary School, Samuel Manganyi says the University of Venda's biogas initiative is changing how rural Limpopo households access energy.
The university in Thohoyandou is helping communities produce clean energy by converting cow dung and plant waste into biogas, while training households to build and maintain low-cost digesters using locally available materials.
The system reduces waste and cuts reliance on expensive electricity and fossil fuels, while providing energy for cooking and heating in off-grid areas.

The 2027 London Marathon has attracted a record one million three hundred and thirty-eight thousand ballot applications, the highest in the event’s history and more than double the 2024 figure.
Organisers say more than one million entries came from the United Kingdom, equal to about 1.8% of the population, reflecting strong local interest in the race.
International runners also drove demand, with over 330,000 applications submitted from more than 200 countries.
Women aged 20 to 29 made up the largest group of UK applicants, marking significant growth in that category.
