The Nelson Mandela Foundation will mark Human Rights Day with a special Making Reading Fun event on the 21st of March in Houghton, Johannesburg.
The gathering will bring families together to celebrate storytelling and promote a love of reading among children as part of Human Rights Month.
The event will also honour Aunty Mathabo, who has spent the past four years reading to children and helping build a welcoming reading community.
Guest authors, including Sihle Isipho Nontshokweni Bikitsha and Gomolemo Moagi, will share their work, with some books also available for sale.

Community food gardens win recognition in Shoprite competition

Six community food gardens across South Africa have been recognised in the Shoprite Group Act For Change Food Garden Competition, which supports local food security and sustainable livelihoods.
The winning projects, from Limpopo, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, were selected from nearly 600 entries for their strong community impact, consistent food production and focus on skills development.
First place went to the ACFS Khunadi Food Garden in Mogoto Village, with all six winners sharing R1 million in support to expand infrastructure, training and production capacity.
Organisers say the initiative highlights the growing role of community gardens in tackling hunger while also creating skills and income opportunities.

Mexico powers ahead with major solar energy expansion

Mexico’s state owned energy utility, the Federal Electricity Commission, has announced a major expansion of solar power projects aimed at boosting clean energy generation and storage.
The plan includes 1.5 gigawatts of solar capacity and battery storage, backed by around 1.6 billion US dollars in investment.
A key development is the expansion of the Puerto Peñasco solar complex in Sonora, which will grow into the largest solar farm in Latin America once completed.
Additional projects in Coahuila and other regions are also planned, with completion expected by the end of 2028 as part of a wider push to strengthen energy security and expand renewable supply.
