The Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival returns to Johannesburg from 24 to 27 June, bringing together music, art, film, poetry and entrepreneurship in celebration of youth creativity and expression.
Marking its 14th year, the festival will feature performances by artists including Zee Nxumalo, DJ Tira, Bucie and DJ Cleo, while a special mural honouring the late creative icon Maria McCloy will also be unveiled.
Organisers say the event provides a platform for young people to showcase their talents and contribute to the growing creative economy.

UP’s Prof Theo van Wyk Makes History With Inaugural Church Music Award

University of Pretoria lecturer and organist Professor Theo van Wyk has been named the first ever recipient of the Andrew Murray SAKOV Award for Church Music.
The newly established honour recognises outstanding contributions to sacred music in Southern Africa and highlights his work as a performer, composer and researcher.
Prof van Wyk was recognised for his Lockdown Büchlein collection, created during the COVID 19 lockdown and inspired by traditional chorale based organ music.
The award celebrates his contribution to church music, performance and academic research in the region.

Johannesburg to Host Major International Day of Yoga Celebration

The Consulate General of India in Johannesburg will host the 12th International Day of Yoga at the Randburg Cricket Club on 20 June 2026, bringing together participants from across Gauteng for one of Africa’s largest yoga gatherings.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom and World Peace,” highlights the practice as a holistic approach to physical health, mental balance and social harmony.
The event will feature a large group yoga session led by experienced instructors and will be open to the public and inclusive of all ages and backgrounds.
Organisers say the celebration continues to strengthen cultural ties and promote wellness within communities.
