55 learners from SA join Engineering Hackathon

Fifty-five learners from underserved schools across South Africa will take part in an engineering hackathon in Johannesburg next week.
The Young Engineers Movement Hackathon, hosted by ORT South Africa and Hudaco, will see learners design and build technology solutions to challenges in their communities.
Eleven teachers will also receive hands-on training to help bring engineering and technology skills back to their classrooms.
The learners' projects will be presented to judges, educators and industry leaders on the final day of the event.

SAID wins two African Excellence Awards

The Society for Animals in Distress has won two awards at the 2026 African Excellence Awards for its mobile veterinary outreach work in Gauteng.
Its mobile clinic treats more than 100 animals during each visit to communities including Tembisa, Ivory Park and Soshanguve, providing vaccinations, emergency care and sterilisation services.
The programme also trains future veterinarians through a partnership with the University of Pretoria and the VetSCO student group.
The organisation plans to expand its sterilisation campaign to reduce animal overpopulation and improve access to animal healthcare.

Eastern Cape youth gain healthcare hubs

Young people in the Eastern Cape now have dedicated spaces to access healthcare services designed specifically for their needs.
The provincial Health Department has opened new Youth Zones offering mental health support, HIV testing, counselling, wellness checks and sexual and reproductive healthcare.
Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa says the youth-friendly facilities are designed to make it easier for teenagers and young adults to seek help and get the care they need:

Bayanda Walaza wins Czech Golden spike 100m title

South African sprinter Bayanda Walaza has won the men's 100 metres at the Golden Spike meeting in Czech Republic.
He clocked 9-point nine-four seconds, matching his personal best and moving to the top of South Africa's 100m rankings for 2026.
Walaza finished ahead of Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme, who took second place in 9.9-9 seconds.
Fellow South African Sinesipho Dambile also impressed with a second-place finish in his event.
