Friends of Kloofendal take on invasive plants at nature reserve
Story 1
Volunteers from Friends of Kloofendal, or FroK, have been removing invasive plant species at the Kloofendal Nature Reserve to protect local wildlife and restore natural habitats.
The team focused on young and flowering plants, ensuring they are cleared before spreading seeds, helping grasses and native vegetation to thrive.
FroK has previously tackled larger invasive trees and shrubs, and now their work targets smaller species such as Pompoms, Inkberry, and Prickly Solanum.
The effort supports the reserve’s ecosystem by reducing bush encroachment, allowing grass growth, and improving conditions for mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, and insects.
The volunteer team works regularly in the reserve, combining conservation with opportunities to observe wildlife and maintain the park’s natural beauty.

Endangered grasshopper rediscovered in KwaZulu-Natal
Story 2
A rare insect not seen for decades has been rediscovered in KwaZulu-Natal’s Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, showing the role small protected areas play in conserving biodiversity.
The granulate bladder grasshopper, classified as endangered, has tiny raised bumps on its body and a swollen male abdomen that amplifies its distinctive call.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife says the find shows the value of research, monitoring, and effective management in protecting South Africa’s unique species.
Umtamvuna Nature Reserve protects critically endangered grasslands and rare plants, proving that even smaller reserves make an important contribution to conservation.
