Restored statues of Amenhotep III unveiled in Luxor
Story 3
Egyptian authorities have unveiled the restored alabaster statues of King Amenhotep III at his mortuary temple in Luxor.

The two statues, each over 9 metres tall, were destroyed by an earthquake around 1,200 years ago.

They depict the Eighteenth Dynasty ruler wearing the traditional nemes headdress and facing east.

Restoration work began in the late 1990s by an Egyptian-German mission, which reassembled the statues from scattered fragments. Officials say the project followed international scientific standards to preserve the monuments for the future.
