Johannesburg learners showcase their science innovations

Hundreds of young Johannesburg scientists have turned their ideas into innovative projects at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Regional Science Fair.
The event at Wits University brought together 387 learners who presented 289 projects covering areas including engineering, environmental studies and biomedical science.
Among them was Grade 6 learner Luthukuthula Nhlapho, who developed a solar powered traffic light after noticing accidents during power outages.
The expo awarded learners for their research and innovation, while encouraging them to pursue science and problem solving.

Komani father and son give back through community projects

A father and son in Komani in the Eastern Cape are helping transform lives through a series of community projects focused on education, healthcare and opportunity.
In a recent project, Abrie and Wessel Erasmus raised enough money to provide prescription glasses to 1 000 learners, with four children also receiving eye surgeries.
They have also upgraded a school for autistic children and funded university studies for two young people, one of whom recently qualified as a chartered accountant.
The pair say their goal is to create lasting opportunities in their community.

Youth activist and Jozi Youth Empire founder Mapula Mojela has taken her anti bullying campaign to Grade 3 learners at Saxonwold Primary School in Johannesburg.
