Renovated clinic brings better healthcare to Pretoria West

Residents of Pretoria West now have access to a safer and more welcoming healthcare facility following the renovation of the Zama Zama Clinic.
The facility has bigger waiting and consultation areas, improved medicine storage, running water and better sanitation.
The project was led by the University of Pretoria’s Community Oriented Primary Care Research Unit, together with businesses, organisations and community members.
What started as a small shipping container in 2016 has now become a modern clinic offering the growing community better access to healthcare.

Cupcake campaign rallies South Africans to support children with cancer

South Africans are being encouraged to become Cupcake Angels and help children with cancer and their families through National Cupcake Day.
The campaign by Cupcakes of Hope has supported families with transport, accommodation, meals and other practical assistance since 2012.
One beneficiary, Mdhluli Nxobile Able from Mpumalanga, travelled regularly to Gauteng for treatment as a teenager and later became a qualified doctor.
National Cupcake Day takes place on 26 September, with more than 80 shopping centres taking part.

Gauteng expands mobile clinic services

Gauteng has expanded its mobile clinic fleet from 46 to 53 units, bringing primary healthcare services closer to communities across the province.`
The seven new clinics were handed over by Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Faith Mazibuko at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
They will serve communities in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng, offering health screenings, HIV and TB services, and checks for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
The clinics are also equipped with medical equipment, oxygen facilities, generators and solar power.

Surfing dog Astro helps students conquer their fears

Astro, a Golden Retriever in Texas, is making waves as a second generation surf instructor on South Padre Island.
The two year old works alongside his owner, Gene Gore, helping students during surfing lessons and supporting those who may feel nervous in the water.
Astro is also being trained as a surf rescue dog and has already helped spot a swimmer caught in a rip current.
His owner says Astro helps him connect with people and makes a big difference to many of the students he teaches
