Phakama Women’s Academy welcomes 22 young women

The Phakama Women’s Academy has welcomed its 12th annual intake, with 22 young women from Emeris, AFDA and the University of Johannesburg joining the 2026 programme.
Based in Kyalami, Midrand, the free programme helps graduates prepare for the workplace through training in communication, confidence, financial skills and career development.
The women will also receive one on one mentorship from leading South African businesswomen.
More than 200 young women have graduated from the academy since it began in 2014.

Tumi Ramokgopa makes South African athletics history

South African hurdler Tumi Ramokgopa has made history after winning two silver medals at the World Championships in Oregon.
She became the first South African athlete to medal in both the 100 metres and 400 metres hurdles at a world championship, with the longer race also producing a personal best.
Earlier this year, she broke the national under 20 record in Germiston.

School farming project grows skills and food in Reiger Park

Learners at Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School in Reiger Park are gaining practical farming skills through two horticultural tunnels established by the Shoprite Foundation.
The school has harvested about 5 000 crops over the past two years, including spinach, cabbage, tomatoes and peppers.
The produce is sold to the community, supports the school feeding scheme and helps fund gardening supplies.
More than 1 700 learners have received practical agricultural training since 2024.

Woman’s milylion euro lottery ticket rescued from rubbish

A woman in southern Italy has recovered a lottery ticket worth one million euros after mistakenly throwing it into a rubbish bin.
The ticket had already been collected by a waste truck when the woman realised it was a winner and contacted the local sanitation company for help.
Workers traced the rubbish and spent hours searching through an entire truckload before eventually finding the ticket intact.
The woman can now claim her million euro prize, thanks to the determination of the sanitation team.
