Kazakhstan Bans Forced Marriages and Bride Kidnappings, Enforcing Up to Ten-Year Prison Sentences
Story 3
Kazakhstan has officially banned forced marriages and bride kidnappings, with offenders now facing up to ten years in prison. The new law, which came into effect this week, aims to protect vulnerable groups, particularly women and adolescents.
Previously, individuals who released kidnapped brides could avoid criminal liability, but the law now closes that loophole. The move comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen women’s rights in the country, following high-profile cases that sparked public outrage.
Authorities hope the law will prevent abuse, curb harmful traditions, and ensure that marriage is entered into freely and safely for all citizens.
