3D-Printed Beak Gives Injured Bird a Second Chance
Story 3
Artis Zoo in Amsterdam has made history by successfully fitting an injured southern ground hornbill with two 3D-printed prostheses to replace the broken upper and lower parts of its beak. The bird was already using its new beak on the day of the surgery.According to the zoo, this is the first known case in the world of both parts of a bird's beak being restored in this way. A beak is essential for birds to preen their feathers and forage for food. Although the hornbill had managed reasonably well with the two remaining stumps, his injury had restricted his everyday activities.
