Learners build electric vehicle in Gauteng

Learners at the Lethabong Maths, Science and ICT School of Specialisation in Gauteng have built a fully functional electric vehicle as part of a school innovation project.
The vehicle was developed through the Schools of Specialisation programme and focuses on cleaner transport technology.
The project aims to reduce emissions by promoting electric mobility while giving learners practical experience in engineering and problem-solving.
Education officials say the initiative prepares students for careers in the automotive and technology sectors.

Grade 5 learners compete in challenge

Grade 5 learners from 23 schools across Johannesburg South competed in the 4th Number Your Words Challenge hosted by Region G Libraries.
The literacy and numeracy competition tested learners in reading, mathematics, logic and geometry during the Tier A semi-final at Lenasia Ext 3 Library on 13-May 2026.
Redwood Academy and Al Aqsa Ext 5 Primary secured places in the finals after competing against Eldocrest Primary and Lenasia Muslim School.
The finals will take place at Lenasia Ext 3 Library on 19 and 20 May as learners battle for top honours.

Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns Durban

The Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns to Vetch’s Beach in Durban later this month, bringing together swimmers, schools and charities to raise funds for conservation, education and community projects.
Since launching in 2023, the event has raised more than R3 million for organisations supporting rescue services, wildlife protection, early childhood education and environmental work.
Swimmers complete distances that convert into donations for participating charities, helping fund projects such as coastal rescue operations and anti-poaching initiatives.
The event was started by four founding charities, including the National Sea Rescue Institute and Project Rhino.

Cape Town hosts first Mandela Marathon

Cape Town will host the first Nelson Mandela Marathon on 18 October 2026, featuring multiple race distances.
The event is part of four sporting initiatives launched by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, including the Mandela Day Walk and Run, Ride4Hope cycling event, the Cape Town Marathon and the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run.
The races running from July to December 2026 across South Africa and neighbouring countries will raise funds for the foundation's programmes.
