Wits School hosts Africa Month programme

The Wits School of Arts is hosting a month-long Africa Month programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, featuring performances, exhibitions, film screenings and public discussions.
Celebrated every May, Africa Month commemorates the formation of the Organisation of African Unity and highlights African heritage, identity and creativity.
This year’s theme, “Water as Life, Memory, and Infrastructure,” explores the role of water in culture and everyday life across Africa and the Global South.
The ongoing programme includes jazz, theatre, workshops and exhibitions, and will conclude later this month with a tribute concert honouring legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba.

Learners join energy transition hackathon

Learners from six Gauteng schools took part in Siemens Energy’s Just Energy Transition hackathon in Midrand, where they developed solutions to energy and sustainability challenges.
The event tested Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners on projects linked to carbon-neutral design, energy careers and waste-to-energy systems.
Buhle Park Secondary School won bursaries and tablets after designing a system that converts industrial heat into electricity to reduce diesel use.
Other schools presented solar-powered food security projects and research on careers in the renewable energy sector.

Garden Route gains another global accolade

South Africa’s Garden Route has added another global title to its growing list of accolades after being ranked among the world’s most Instagrammable road trips in a 2026 study by eCarsTrade.
The study analysed Instagram hashtag data from 37 road trips across six continents and placed the Garden Route sixth worldwide with more than 754,000 hashtags linked to the route and its landmarks.
Stretching from Mossel Bay to Storms River, the route attracts travellers with its coastline, forests, wildlife and mountain scenery.
The recognition follows another 2026 global study that named the Garden Route the world’s best road trip for driving conditions.

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has welcomed the launch of the Hollywoodbets Super League.
The league will move from a 16-team format to two streams of eight teams, with a championship match added at the end of the season.
From 2027, the competition will shift to a two-division system with promotion and relegation.
The new season starts this week and is expected to widen the player pool available for future Banyana Banyana selections:
