UJ Arts & Culture, in collaboration with Black Major, will present Home at Last: A Tribute to Bheki Mseleku, a live jazz performance honouring the late South African pianist and composer.
The concert features award-winning pianist Bokani Dyer and internationally acclaimed flautist Gareth Lockrane, a former member of Mseleku’s band, leading a South African ensemble to perform previously unreleased compositions for the first time in South Africa.
The event celebrates Mseleku’s enduring influence, blending heritage, innovation, and improvisation while preserving his musical legacy.
It also connects artists and audiences, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation and collaboration.

A Western Cape initiative is changing how young children experience maths while creating opportunities for unemployed women.
The MathMoms programme trains mothers to support foundation phase learners with basic maths through fun, play based lessons at schools and at home.
Since launching in Cape Town in 2016, the project has grown to reach thousands of learners, helping build confidence in a subject many find challenging.
The mothers are mentored by teachers and gain valuable skills, while also creating supportive learning environments.
The programme is strengthening links between schools, families and communities while improving early education outcomes

R2 Billion Secured to Protect Tongaat Hulett and Jobs

Minister of Trade and Industry, Parks Tau, confirmed that the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has provided over R2 billion to stabilise Tongaat Hulett amid financial difficulties.
The funding aims to keep operations running, protect jobs, and safeguard the sugar cane industry in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.
Since October 2022, the IDC has worked with business rescue practitioners, management, and stakeholders to prevent liquidation and support a sustainable exit from business rescue, with long-term solutions in progress to secure the industry’s future.

Tunisian Company Launches Solar-Powered EVs for African Cities

A Tunisian company is introducing solar-powered electric vehicles for urban and commercial use across Africa. Bako Motors is producing a small delivery van and a compact passenger car, both equipped with rooftop solar panels that provide up to 50 kilometres of free energy per day.
The B-Van can carry 360 kilograms of cargo with a range of 260 kilometres, while the two-seater Bee is designed for city travel. About 40 percent of the materials, including batteries and steel, are sourced locally, supporting African industry.
With production facilities ready in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, Bako Motors plans to manufacture thousands of vehicles, offering affordable, sustainable alternatives where charging infrastructure is limited.
