Japanese football fans are once again being praised for cleaning up stadiums after matches at the World Cup, continuing a tradition they started in 1998.
After matches, fans are seen collecting litter in the stands and leaving seating areas spotless, reflecting a strong culture of respect and collective responsibility.
The practice has become widely recognised at global tournaments, with supporters often carrying bags to remove their own waste before leaving stadiums.
The gesture has drawn international attention for its consistency across decades and its positive impact on matchday environments. Some fans say the habit is rooted in respect for the stadium, the game and fellow supporters.*
