UKZN Herbarium Supports Global Biodiversity Data Drive
Teaser / Tailpiece story
The University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Bews Herbarium in Pietermaritzburg is contributing to a global effort to improve biodiversity data and strengthen conservation work.
A new report by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew warns that thousands of plant and fungal species face extinction, while many more remain undiscovered or poorly documented.
UKZN’s herbarium, which houses more than 250,000 plant specimens, has fully digitised its collection and is making data more accessible to researchers worldwide.
The work supports international efforts to use digitisation and data sharing to close knowledge gaps and improve conservation decisions.
