Animal Charity Wins Two African Excellence Awards

The Society for Animals in Distress has won two awards at the 2026 African Excellence Awards for its mobile veterinary outreach work in Gauteng.
Its mobile clinic treats more than 100 animals during each visit to communities including Tembisa, Ivory Park and Soshanguve, providing vaccinations, emergency care and sterilisation services.
The programme also trains future veterinarians through a partnership with the University of Pretoria and the VetSCO student group.
The organisation plans to expand its sterilisation campaign to reduce animal overpopulation and improve access to animal healthcare.

Hillcrest children donate to families in need

Children from schools and community groups around Hillcrest have donated oranges, food jars and money to support families assisted by Project Hope.
Learners from Thomas More College donated 437 oranges, while children from Mustard Seed Learning Space prepared 140 Jars of Hope for vulnerable households.
Pupils from Bright Buttons Pre-Primary School sold cakes and donated the proceeds to the charity.
The donations will help provide food and support to children and families in need across the community.

Eldos Chess, Robotics and Coding was among the exhibitors, with representative Seth Roberts saying these skills can equip young people for the jobs of the future:

Bayanda Walaza wins Czech Republic 100m gold

South African sprinter Bayanda Walaza has won the men's 100 metres at the Golden Spike meeting in Czech Republic.
He clocked 9-point nine-four seconds, matching his personal best and moving to the top of South Africa's 100m rankings for 2026.
Walaza finished ahead of Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme, who took second place in 9.9-9 seconds.
Fellow South African Sinesipho Dambile also impressed with a second-place finish in his event.
