UJ Student Uses NSFAS Allowance to Feed Homeless in Joburg
Story 1
A University of Johannesburg student is turning her NSFAS allowance into a lifeline for homeless people in Joburg.
Nobukhosi Ngubeni, a 21-year-old second-year neuropsychology student, was once a beneficiary of care packages as a child. Inspired by the kindness she received, she now saves R500 each month from her R1,700 allowance to buy food supplies.
Every Sunday, with help from her sister, she prepares and serves warm meals to homeless people in Berea — despite limited cooking equipment and resources.
Her father says the family is proud of her selfless spirit, describing her as a humanitarian.
Beyond food, Nobukhosi also started a sanitary pad drive, distributing supplies on campus and in public parks.
She hopes her story inspires more young people to support vulnerable communities in practical ways.

Smart Upgrades for Joburg's Water Network
Story 2
2.Smart Upgrades for Joburg's Water Network

Johannesburg Water is enhancing water security by installing smart controllers on high-demand reservoirs and pressure valves. These advanced systems help manage water pressure, reducing leaks and bursts while improving overall supply efficiency.

Since 2023, 27 units have been installed, with plans to expand to 100 controllers by June 2025. Additionally, 125 noise loggers will detect underground leaks early, ensuring a more sustainable and reliable water network for the city.
This initiative comes as Rand Water rolls out a large-scale maintenance operation affecting multiple municipalities until July. The upgrades aim to complement efforts to stabilise supply during and beyond the planned outages.

Raised in Soweto and once a daily commuter to campus, his journey from humble beginnings to global recognition has been marked by resilience, passion, and a few chance moments.
Now leading major research in the Cradle of Humankind, Makhubela says the award—and its grant—will boost his cave studies and support his postgraduate students.
He calls the honour “surreal” and says he’s grateful to UJ for giving him the foundation to pursue his dreams.
