UJ Geologist Honoured with Global National Geographic Award
Story 1
Dr Tebogo Makhubela, a geologist and academic at the University of Johannesburg, has been named one of only 15 global recipients of the 2025 National Geographic Wayfinder Award.
Raised in Soweto and once a daily commuter to campus, his journey from humble beginnings to global recognition has been marked by resilience, passion, and a few chance moments.
Now leading major research in the Cradle of Humankind, Makhubela says the award—and its grant—will boost his cave studies and support his postgraduate students.
He calls the honour “surreal” and says he’s grateful to UJ for giving him the foundation to pursue his dreams.

SA Nears Exit from Greylist, Raising Hopes for Economic Relief
Story 2
South Africa has met all 22 reform targets to be removed from the global greylist, according to the Financial Action Task Force.
KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers says this could ease the country's R1.2 billion daily interest burden and improve investor confidence.
Treasury confirmed that a final on-site inspection is the last step before full removal.
Rodgers and provincial treasury head Carol Coetzee say this opens the door for increased investment and more funds to reach provinces.
The ANC has welcomed the development, calling it a major milestone in restoring credibility to South Africa’s financial systems.

Youth Day Donations Raise R2.7 Million for Burn Survivors
Story 3
A Youth Day fundraiser has sparked national generosity, with South Africans donating R2.7 million to help young burn survivors.
The campaign, supported by Jacaranda FM and its listeners, aimed to replace a vital laser machine at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg.
Not only was the R1.4 million target met, but enough was raised to secure a second machine at a discounted price.
These devices will help treat up to 40 children each month, easing pain and improving recovery.
The response shows the power of community when it matters most.
