Gauteng Health launches Mandela Month Surgical Marathon

The Gauteng Department of Health will conduct more than 1,000 surgeries and clinical procedures in the month of July as part of its annual Mandela Month Surgical Marathon.

The initiative forms part of the department's ongoing efforts to reduce surgical waiting lists, improve access to healthcare and restore dignity to patients that are awaiting life-changing procedures across the province's public hospitals.

A total of 19 public hospitals have committed to carrying out 1,078 surgeries and clinical procedures by the end of July, exceeding last year's total of 806 surgeries.

The Gauteng Health spokesperson Steve Mabona says the marathon aims to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy by restoring hope, dignity and timely healthcare to patients across the province.

Summit gymnasts claim provincial colours

The Summit Gymnastics Club celebrated a successful performance at the Gauteng Festival after 34 of its gymnasts earned top honours at the province's premier competition.

The competition was held at the National Training Centre in Centurion and saw athletes compete across Levels 1 to 3 in Women's Artistic Gymnastics, with many securing provincial colours in their age groups.

The gymnasts competed on vault, bars, beam and floor. The Club owner Lauren Perry said 24 gymnasts finished in the gold category, nine in silver and three in bronze.

Trek4Mandela expedition continues mission to end period poverty

The annual Trek4Mandela expedition is currently underway on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, where
climbers are tackling Africa’s highest peak, in honour of the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela.

The initiative which is led by the Imbumba Foundation, aims to raise funds for the Caring4Girls programme, which provides menstrual hygiene products to schoolgirls, reducing the impact of period poverty.

Since its inception, Trek4Mandela has brought together climbers from across the country, turning the climb into a movement focused on dignity, education and social change.
